Covering the wives of performers such as Glenn Campbell and Kix Brooks, among others (not to mention Wynona Judd's nonperformer husband), the text emanates from Nancy Jones (Mrs. George, after D-I-V-O-R-C-E from Tammy Wynette), who "participated in the writing and was made privy to every chapter," and longtime country music chronicler and ghostwriter Carter. In a typical vignette, Mrs. Jones and Mrs. Hank (Billie Jean) Williams Sr. (who, widowed by Johnny Horton, qualifies twice for coverage here) commiserate about living with famous drunks; Billie Jean reveals that Hank, "since he weighed so little," got drunk on a mere six-pack, which by today's standards may seem a lot but back then was nothing. Unintentionally, it sometimes seems, these frontline stories from the marriage wars of celebrities wind up spotlighting the pains, joys, and insights found in country-music lyrics.
