The Magic of Math is a fantastic book, as one would expect from Arthur Benjamin. Benjamin's enthusiasm shines throughout the book, mathematical ideas are beautifully explained, and each chapter is surprisingly hard to put down! Moreover, the book is appropriate for many different audiences, including:-- Anyone who wants a better understanding of what it means to do mathematics, or wants to see the beauty and creativity inherent in mathematics-- Middle and High School students who want to see some of the mathematics ``behind the scenes'' of what they're learning in school-- Burgeoning mathematicians who want to see mathematics beyond the scope of the grade school curriculum-- Tutors and teachers who want an easy source of fun material to engage their students-- Anyone who wants to really understand *why* the math they learned in grade school is true.People familiar with this genre of mathematics outreach books (e.g., Here's Looking at Euclid, The Joy of X, Love and Math, etc.) often find that many of the books are very similar, and that their contents tend to overlap greatly. While readers will certainly find common topics like the Pythagorean Theorem or the Fibonacci Numbers in Benjamin's book, I think they'll also encounter quite a substantial amount of new material in this book. In particular, Benjamin goes into more mathematical depth with much of the material he discusses. Further, a quick skim of the contents reveals a lot of beautiful mathematics that is not commonly in outreach books, including an especially thorough discussion of exciting topics in a field of mathematics known as combinatorics. If you're interested in understanding the kind of thinking a mathematician does, then you'll find these chapters especially novel! At the same time, Benjamin's book is very readable. He clearly motivates the mathematical ideas he shares, and then proceeds to explain them in concrete and understandable ways. Of course, as with any good book, this book will make you think! However, you'll have Arthur Benjamin supporting you along the way, and you'll find yourself learning quite a bit of mathematics with that support. Benjamin is also sure to include a few optional and sometimes particularly robust mathematical ideas, but he clearly marks these as ``asides,'' explicitly indicating to readers that grappling with these ideas is not necessary for understanding the material. Instead, these aside sections serve to make the book more interesting to people who might reread sections of the book, or who already have an especially strong background in mathematics. The Bottom Line: This is a great book that can (and should!) be read by people from a huge variety of backgrounds. Beautiful mathematical ideas lie waiting to be discovered, and readers will encounter both engaging prose and crystal-clear mathematical exposition.Disclaimer: I was given a free copy of this book by the author, though there was neither an expectation nor a suggestion that I write a review

My third grade granddaughter got a D in math! When I squared 81 in my head she was disbelieving until we did it longhand. Her eyes widened and ensued an excited review of all she had learned in school and was so excited to share. The book paid for itself several times over from the first few pages.

I only wish Arthur Benjamin were around when I was struggling with math in high school and college. Arthur Benjamin's books have changed my life and my perception of myself as a word person, never a numbers person. Now I am both. The section on magic squares is worth the price of the whole book, and there is so much more.

"Here are some fun facts about ellipses," writes Arthur Benjamin.By now, you should know if you're likely to like this book or hate it. Benjamin clearly loves numbers, math, and anything related. Most of his chapters explore one narrow topic -- Pascal's triangle, the golden ratio, or the Fibonacci series, for example -- beginning with the oft-repeated basics, but quickly moving into detail and surprises. Of ellipses: If you have a pool table shaped like an ellipse and you put a ball at one foci, you can hit it in any direction and after it bounces off the wall, it will pass through the other foci. Occasionally he gets into a level of detail that I didn't find especially interesting, but others may. Overall, I enjoyed the book very much.

I'm 77 yrs old and have a lot of Drs. appointments. I bought the Kindle version and this is a perfect book to skip around in and read from different chapters setting in the waiting room. That's not why i bought it - i bought because i like math but the book and Kindle work great for me.

low rating only because I thought that not understanding math (as an adult), it could be a painless way to learn to understand it. I could only understand the introductory exercise. Gave it to my son who explained to me what calculus is for. He thinks it's a good book. I'll stick to bugging him about math

I am a huge fan of Dr. Benjamin's and this book doesn't disappoint. A great companion to the Great Courses' and Dr. Benjamin's Joy of Mathematics.

This is a great book. I wish I had this book way back when I was in middle / high school. I particularly enjoyed the tips on doing mental math...Great book, I highly recommend it!

Review
"...a valuable resource...clear to those who are not experts in the field...an excellent reference for practicing engineers, including electrical, mechanical, and industrial engineers. The author's extensive experience clearly shows in the content."
--Choice, October 2001

From the Back Cover
More than half of the total energy produced in developed countries is consumed by electric motors or, more precisely, converted into mechanical energy, freeing society from the tedious burden of physical labor. Among the many types of motors, induction machines still have the unparalleled popularity they did a century ago. At least 90% of industrial drive systems employ induction motors.

Most of the motors are uncontrolled, but the share of adjustable speed induction motor drives fed from power electronic converters is steadily increasing, phasing out dc drives. It is estimated that more than $50 billion could be saved annually by replacing all "dumb" motors with controlled ones.

This book is devoted to various aspects of control of induction motors. In contrast to existing books on adjustable speed drives, a great effort has been made to make the covered topics easy to understand by nonspecialists. Although primarily written for professional electrical, mechanical, and industrial engineers, the book will be an essential graduate textbook and also an undergraduate reference source.

This book is a comprehensive reference source for practicing engineers and students specializing in electric power engineering and industrial electronics. It illustrates the state of the art in induction motors, beginning with characteristics and basic dynamic models of induction motors, and progressing to low- and high-performance drive systems.

Like aircraft of today, vimanas were used to fly through the air from city to city; to conduct aerial surveys of uncharted lands; and as delivery vehicles for awesome weapons. David Hatcher Childress, popular Lost Cities author and star of the History Channel's long-running show Ancient Aliens, takes us on an astounding investigation into tales of ancient flying machines. In his new book, packed with photos and diagrams, he consults ancient texts and modern stories and presents astonishing evidence that aircraft, similar to the ones we use today, were used thousands of years ago in India, Sumeria, China and other countries. This means that these ancient civilizations had advanced metal technology, electricity and the engineering knowledge of flight many thousands of years before our own era of flight technology. Childress discusses ancient UFO sightings, the fascinating lore of ancient flight and the technology allegedly used in the flying machines of the ancients.

In addition to detailed protocols and practical notes, each technique includes an overview of its general importance, the time and expense involved in its application and a description of the theoretical mechanisms of each step. This enables users to design their own modifications or to adapt the method to different systems. Surzycki has been holding undergraduate courses and workshops for many years, during which time he has extensively modified and refined the techniques described here.

Review

This laboratory manual differs from many of the numerous others currently on the market in that is explains the "Whys" as well as the "Hows" of the most commonly used molecular techniques. ... It is absolutely jam packed full of those little titbits of information that friendly Post Docs occasionally feel inclined to share with students. ... I liked this book, ... (it) is principally aimed at students ... and the emphasis is very definitely on making techniques accessible to these people. ... this particular book more than adequately fills the niche it is intended to cover.

From the Back Cover
This laboratory manual gives a thorough introduction to modern, cost efficient techniques in Molecular Biology, which can find application in many different fields. It is the result of practical experience, with each protocol having been used extensively in undergraduate courses and workshops or tested in the author's laboratory. Thus, they are also likely to work in inexperienced hands the first time they are performed.
Step-by-step protocols and practical notes are provided. The distinguishing feature of this manual compared to others is the detailed explanation of the theoretical mechanisms of each step and the discussion of the importance of the techniques. In addition, each protocol includes an indication of the time and expense involved in its application. This knowledge will enable the users to design their own modifications or to adapt the method to different systems.
Dr. Surzycki has been teaching undergraduate courses and leading workshops in introductory Molecular Biology for many years, during which time he has extensively modified and refined the techniques he has described in this manual.
